Domestic raw steel production in the United States experienced a notable recovery in the week ending September 12, 2026, with total raw steel production reaching 1,900,000 net tons, marking a capability utilization rate of 82.3%.
Institute data shows that the current production volume represents a 7.0% increase compared to the corresponding week in the previous year, 2025, which recorded 1,775,000 net tons with a capability utilization rate of 78.4%. This week's production also increased by 5.1% compared to the preceding week ending September 5, 2026, when production reached 1,808,000 net tons with a utilization rate of 78.3%.
Total adjusted production from the beginning of the year through September 12, 2026, reached approximately 66,537,000 net tons, achieving a capability utilization rate of 79.1%. This figure represents a 5.5% increase compared to the 63,093,000 net tons recorded during the same period last year, when the utilization rate was 77.2%.
The Institute's report indicated the distribution of production by district (in net tons):
• Northeast: 126 - Great Lakes: 538 - Midwest: 296 - South: 876 - West: 64. The total reached: 1900 net tons.
The American Iron and Steel Institute stated that the raw steel capability production figures in the report are estimates, explaining that they are compiled from weekly data submitted by approximately 50% of domestic production capabilities, integrated with the latest monthly production data for the remaining capabilities.
It recommended using this report as a basis for assessing general production trends, while the Institute's monthly report provides more detailed information based on companies representing 75% of American production capabilities.
