ArcelorMittal Belgium received the Oceanus Frontier at its port in Ghent. This vessel is described as the world's first bulk carrier powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), carrying a shipment of iron ore from Canada in mid-September 2026.

The ship is one of five vessels in the global fleet transporting raw materials for ArcelorMittal. These ships are currently capable of using LNG as fuel. After unloading its cargo in Ghent, the vessel will return to Canada to load a new shipment for the company.

Using LNG instead of traditional marine fuel can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 23%, equivalent to about 500 tons per voyage of roughly 2,700 nautical miles. It also reduces sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions.

ArcelorMittal considers LNG a transitional solution for reducing raw material transport emissions and is exploring the use of newer, more energy-efficient vessels in the future.

ArcelorMittal is a multinational group headquartered in Luxembourg. It is the largest steel producer in Europe and one of the world's leading integrated steel and mining companies. Its crude steel production reached 55.6 million tons in 2025, with steelmaking operations in one country and iron ore production in North America, South America, Africa, and Europe.
