The "Steel Service Centers" working group of Eurometaux discussed the increasing regulatory and operational challenges facing the European sector, primarily the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), customs requirements, import quota management, logistics, packaging rules, and load securing, during its meeting in Maastricht, Netherlands, on September 10.

The meeting was attended by 29 representatives from 19 companies from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Eurometaux President Alexander Julius emphasized the need for a level playing field across the European steel value chain, ensuring that imported steel-intensive manufactured products are subject to similar carbon, customs, and trade obligations.

Participants also discussed the melt and cast country of origin documentation requirements, which will come into effect in the EU from October 1, 2026. The group urged companies to obtain the necessary documents from their suppliers as soon as possible. The group intends to organize a dedicated online session to explain the obligations associated with the new EU packaging regulation.

Steel Service Centers (SSC): Pivotal links between major steel production and manufacturing companies (mills or parent companies like ArcelorMittal or ThyssenKrupp) and the factories and companies using steel in end-use sectors (such as automotive, construction, home appliances, and mechanical engineering).
