Hot-rolled coil prices rise in Europe despite weak demand

1 min read

Quick Summary

Hot-rolled coil prices in Northern Europe and Italy saw a slight increase despite weak demand and buyer resistance, with prices ranging between €740 and €750 per tonne. This rise is attributed to high warehouse inventories and limited import pressure due to the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, giving producers room to raise prices.

Hot-rolled coil prices in Northern Europe and Italy have risen slightly, despite weak demand and continued buyer resistance to price increases, according to market data.

In Northern Europe, target price levels ranged between €740 and €750 per tonne ex-works, with offers reaching €760, without new deals recorded during the week. Fastmarkets' daily index was €748.33 per tonne on October 1, 2026, up €1.45 from the previous day, up €6.66 over the week, and stable compared to September 2026.

In Italy, trading activity remained limited, with acceptable price levels ranging between €740 and €750 per tonne ex-works. The daily index was €745 per tonne, up €1.25 from the previous day, up €7.5 over the week, and up €32.5 compared to September 2026.

Traders attribute the market's limited ability to absorb further increases to high warehouse inventories, while the limited pressure from imports, under the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), provides more room for producers to raise prices, despite continued buyer caution.
